Jack Peters Bridge closure to take place next week

MENDOCINO CO., 11/27/24 — Night closures of the Jack Peters Creek Bridge, on state Highway 1 just north of Mendocino, previously scheduled for this week, have been postponed due to weather conditions, said Caltrans.

The closures are now scheduled for Monday and Tuesday from 10 p.m.-6 a.m., to accommodate bridge falsework installation.

Traffic along state Highway 1 will be impacted from county Road 500D to Lansing Street in Mendocino. Meaning motorists will not be able to travel from Fort Bragg or Caspar to Mendocino, or vice versa, during the scheduled times. Motorists should plan accordingly.

According to Caltrans, the bridge deck is being widened and its railings upgraded.

Jack Peters Creek Bridge was built in 1939 and after it is completed, it will have wider lanes and shoulders and a pedestrian walkway that will link the California Coastal Trail from county Road 500D to Lansing Street.

The bridge has been under construction since March. One-way traffic controls have been in place for months and are expected to continue through spring according to Caltrans.

The closure is so crews can set up falsework — temporary scaffolding and structures used only during construction. Caltrans said the scheduled closure may change again depending on weather and road conditions.

Emergency responders will be able to utilize Highway 1 during the closure. Responders will be escorted by construction crews, said Caltrans.
