Seaweed, sea urchins, classic cars, a big political protest and a celebration of classic vocals are all ways you can start your Father’s Day Weekend on Saturday. learning about sea weed gathering at MacKerricher State Park, see one of the best vintage and hot rod cars shows in Northern California, attend the No Kings Day protest in Fort Bragg on Noyo Bridge at 11 a.m, and finish with music sung for kings, 18th-20th century vocals at Preston Hall in Mendocino. Father’s Day is Sunday.
Mendocino Sea Vegetables owner Larry Knowles will lead a seaweed walk at 7 a.m. at MacKerricher State Park. Meet at the Laguna Point parking lot. The walk will end by 9:30. Next, would be city blocks loaded with cars in Fort Bragg, beginning at 9 a.m.
Filling Franklin and Laurel Streets in the heart of downtown Fort Bragg will be the 19th Annual Classic Car Show put on by North Coast Rodders. There are raffle prizes, judging in several categories and a chance to vote on the most popular car.
Next we go from seaweed, to fabulous rides to political resistance. The No Kings protest led by Mendocino Indivisible on Saturday will comprise the lunch greeting to Fort Bragg on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. It will cross the south side of the Noyo Bridge. The plans are to keep clear of the roadway and shoulder. Participants are asked to park at Mendocino College’s lot, not the Boatyard Shopping Center or other private spaces.
There have been no indications of local trouble for the local protest, which is scheduled for the same day as President Trump’s birthday parade in Washington D.C.. Trump has talked about doing a march on his birthday since his first term. Saturday is also being celebrated as the 250th birthday of the U.S Army. The crackdown on protests in Los Angeles has led many to wonder if there would be bigger crowds, counterprotests or some sort of crackdown here. There is rumored to be a counter protest coming in Willits, but no rumors to that effect on the Coast. There will be official No Kings events in Ukiah, Willits, Fort Bragg and Point Arena. A protest is also planned in Gualala. From the organizers:
We will spread out over a half-mile of sidewalk, from McDonald's to the Harbor Lite Lodge, on the east side of Highway One in Fort Bragg. This includes the Noyo Bridge, but also lots of sidewalk space on solid ground for folks who don't want to be on the bridge. Organizers are asking participants to stay on the sidewalk at all times, keeping the entire roadway (including the shoulder/bike lanes) clear. Do not attempt to cross the highway on foot anywhere outside of the crosswalks, located at Boatyard Drive and at Cypress Street. Our event does not include the west side of the highway.
Please do not park on private property, which includes the Boatyard Shopping Center and the grassy areas )between the coffee kiosk and the fast food eatery.
At 11 a.m to 11:30 am, you can go to Van Damme State Park in Little River for a sea urchin talk .There is supposed to be a sea urchin festival as well, but have not gotten any info on that.
Later that day, there will be a community recital of vocals from the 18th to 20th in Preston Hall on the campus of Mendocino Presbyterian Church.
A group of local vocalists, many professional as well as renowned in our community, will sing opera arias, duets, spirituals, art songs, and more. The recital takes place on Saturday, June 14th at 3:00 pm in Preston Hall in Mendocino.
The music is drawn from the 18th to the 20th Centuries. The vocalists are Vincent Russo, Matthew Miksak, Marius Constantin, Matthew Evans, Randy Knutson, Evelyn Harris, Cynthia Frank, James Blanton, and Barbara Barkovich.
The singers will be accompanied by pianists Robin Knutson and Marie-Claire Dizin, as well as guitarist John Redding.
