Police Chief tells how two officers saved man’s life, describes “active shooter” event underway Tuesday
The active shooter event is underway today in Fort Bragg from 9 a.m to noon on Tuesday. Its a discussion-based event, involving 16 agencies, but no press or public.. Be aware it’s happening, we were told they would be going around town. Not sure if the talking involves any drills or tests…. About 16 local, county and state partners will work through a coordinated response to a simulated active shooter mass casualty incident on the Mendocino coast. It’s a discussion-based exercise and not open to the public.

Police Chief Eric Swift gave a report on that and other matters to the Fort Bragg City Council Monday night and also detailed how two FBPD officers had saved the life of a man
“We want to recognize two of our officers, Officer (Amanda) Pacheco and Officer (Keyona) Martinez.” The two women responded to a disturbance call. “When they arrived and spoke to a gentleman (who told them nothing was wrong) but they recognized something wasn’t right with him, so they continued to talk with him. They got him to agree to the emergency room. The emergency room stated that he would have died if they hadn’t brought him in. He was in a medical crisis. So I want to recognize them. They did a great job.
Then the chief told the council about gang investigation assistance the FBPD got from the Santa Rosa Police Department- old stomping grounds for Swift.
“We also, along with the lines of just trying to train our officers and community, we had the Santa Rosa police department here. They came up last week, two days, two different days, to help train us on gang investigations. We’re very thankful for that. And then we’re also continuing to work with the task force to help us with specific investigations. They helped us with the drive-by shooting. Here is the press release we used to report that issue. We were able to arrest two of the suspects from that case utilizing the task force.

The chief also recognized Capt. Thomas O’Neal on his successful graduation from the Law Enforcement Command College. The college is a 14 month Executive Leadership Program designed to prepare law enforcement officers to address complex and emergency public safety challenges. Captain O’Neill continues to apply this advanced training in his role as emergency manager for both the city of Fort Bragg and the Fort Bragg Unified School District, a city press release stated.
