Vet Rep now on the job

Fort Bragg dvocate-News/Staff

New Mendocino County Veterans Services Representative Ulyses Lopez knows a lot about serving his country.

While still at Fort Bragg High School, he joined the U.S Army and served in Iraq. The proud veteran and member of the FBHS class of 2002 returned home to his wife and two children. Even after getting out of the service, he continued to serve, this time his fellow veterans. While working on his AA degree at College of the Redwoods, he did work-study service in the veterans” office in Fort Bragg.

When funding was restored to allow the Fort Bragg office to be open two days a week for regular hours again, Lopez was picked to serve as the Coast”s veterans representative.

“Being a veteran myself, I can relate to those who are just getting out, and the issues they face,” Lopez said. “I got to know many of the older veterans while I was doing work study here in the office.”

“Ulyses is a great choice. He is from Fort Bragg and has experience in the office,” said Senior Veterans Representative Alice Watkins, who had been running the Coast office one day per week.

Frank then got a prestigious Kiplinger Investigative Reporting fellowship and was city editor of the Newark Ohio, Advocate and then came back to California for 4 years as managing editor of the Napa Valley Register before working as a Dominican University professor, then coming to Fort Bragg to be with his aging mom, Betty Lou Hartzell, and working for the Fort Bragg Advocate News. Frank paid the bills during that decade + with a successful book business.
